You’re looking to start or improve on the Power BI Report development process in your organization, but you’re not sure what a Development Process in Power BI is, or you’re wondering why you should even care.
If you are new to developing Power BI Reports or starting to see reports in your organization that are slow, duplicated or not in use, while the number of reports is increasing, you are probably in need of a Report Development Process.
In this one-day workshop, we will look at some of the questions you should ask yourself when setting up a Power BI Report Development process. We’ll start with a dataset and a use case, and work our way through the development of a report with discussions, demos and hands-on work.
At the end of the day, you will have a better understanding of what you need to consider and evaluate for your reports to make sure that they are trustworthy, user-friendly, answer the right questions, and are high performing!
The day will be divided into 4 modules.
Module 1: Requirement gathering techniques
How can we make sure that the reports we are developing are solving the needs of the report consumer? We will see what tools and techniques we can take advantage of to make sure our amazing reports get used, without our consumers returning to the infamous excel sheet.
Module 2: Data modelling approaches
We will then look at different setups for the data for different situations. What if shared datasets already exist, should we use those? Or should we take advantage of Dataflows or Datamarts in the Power BI Service? Should there be a rule on whether the report developers should use Import mode and Direct Query? Let’s see if there are any guidelines that we should consider adding to our development process.
Module 3: Storytelling
How can we answer the questions and meet the need for insight from our report consumers in the best possible way? What visuals should we use? How should we place these in our report? How can we make the report user-friendly? There are millions of different ways to visually structure a report. In this module, we will discuss different approaches, best practices and pitfalls.
Module 4: Report optimization
Now that our report is full of trustworthy data and visuals that deliver insight, are there any optimizations we should consider looking into? Could we improve our visuals or DAX queries? Are there any external tools we could take advantage of to make sure we optimize the report performance?

At the end of this course, we will have discussed some important topics that should be part of your Report Development Process for Power BI.
You will leave with a better understanding of the possibilities and options you need to consider, guidelines you might want to use, pros and cons, and best practices you should take into consideration when building out a process to match the needs of your organization.
Level: Intermediate. You have used Power BI Desktop before, and you know how to develop and publish a report.
